Airport Engineering

MCAS Yuma and Yuma International Airport (YIA) are unique, being the only airfield in the nation where military operations and commercial flights operate side by side. MCAS Yuma will soon be home for five F-35 Joint Strike Fighter squadrons, which is driving a flurry of activity to bring the airfield up to standard necessary to support the F-35 program's infrastructure needs. YIA's dynamic Airport Director has been expanding and improving YIA with remarkable enthusiasm and foresight. His efforts have succeeded in attracted an astounding variety of clients including Boeing, Million Air FBO, Fed Ex, Jacobs Engineering (a NASA contractor), and a new US Customs and Border Protection complex.

Our team is deeply involved in the vigorous expansion and improvement activities on both the military and civilian side of MCAS/ YIA. We are well acquainted with the geophysical and climatic conditions that have a unique impact to the projects undertaken. We have also developed excellent working relationships with important entities on both sides of the field, reflected in comments you can find on the page entitled "What Our Clients Say".

Airport Experience

Taxiway A, K, & L, Marine Corps Air Station - Yuma, Arizona

NEI provided topographic survey and civil design for this design-build project that included the removal and replacement of approximately 30,000 square yards of taxiway shoulder, and all associated taxiway lighting. During construction, NEI provided materials testing, construction staking, and inspections. $2.1 million.

Taxiway Y, Yuma International Airport - Yuma, Arizona

Yuma International Airport is the only airport in the nation where military operations and commercial flights operate side-by-side. NEI provided the design of a 75 LF wide by 4,700 LF long concrete pavement taxiway and all associated drainage, to facilitate traffic to and from MCAS taxiways. Taxiway Y is the first of 4 phases to be completed over a 4-year period. $8.2 million

Taxiway F-3, Yuma International Airport - Yuma, Arizona

The Taxiway F-3 project included the demolition, reconstruction and rehabilitation of 2,100 linear feet of commercial taxiway. NEI provided civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, environmental engineering, land surveying, construction staking, and construction administration all in accordance with FAA standards. We played a significant role in ensuring that the construction schedule was strictly adhered to throughout the project. $2.3 million

GA Apron Rehabilitation, Yuma International Airport - Yuma, Arizona

NEI provided topographic survey, geotechnical testing, civil design, pavement design, for the removal and replacement of 133,600 square yards of the general aviation apron. The design included all associated tie downs, shoulders, striping and signage. During construction, NEI provided construction administration, construction staking, and quality assurance materials testing. $2.1 million.

DCC Apron Phase I, Yuma International Airport - Yuma, Arizona

NEI provided complete design services for the new 90,000 square foot concrete apron and 16,800 square foot fuel tank island, as well as the rehabilitation of an existing 90,000 square foot concrete apron. All construction inspections, quality assurance material testing, and construction staking on this project were completed in-house. $1.8 million.

DCC Apron Phase 2, Yuma International Airport - Yuma, Arizona

The DCC Apron Phase 2 project includes approximately 79,500 square yards of Portland cement concrete apron. NEI provided complete civil design and support services including a geotechnical investigation and topographic survey. NEI also addressed the stormwater issues and designed an economical trench drain system. NEI has been selected by YIA to provide all construction administration and inspections, quality assurance material testing and construction staking. $11.5 million.

US Customs and Border Protection, Yuma Air Marine Hangar Complex - Yuma, Arizona

The US Customs and Border Protection Complex was developed to support the mission of the Department of Homeland Security. NEI was selected as the A/E firm to complete all design elements including topographic survey and geotechnical investigation. The complex includes a Storage Hangar, an Administration Hangar and a Maintenance Hangar. This project is an example of our ability to partner with multiple agencies, meet aggressive schedules and create a functional, state-of-the-art facility that meets the demands of Homeland Security. $8.5 million

Million Air FBO, Yuma International Airport - Yuma, Arizona

This project involved the complete remodel of an existing 8,800 SF aircraft hangar into a first class FBO (Fixed Base Operation). Since the existing structure did not meet current code requirements, NEI's innovative design concept allowed for the upgrades necessary to meet current codes while keeping the project within budget. NEI provided architecture, civil design, geotechnical testing, topographic survey, construction staking, inspections and contract administration. $2.3 million.

Pappy Boyington Hangar, Yuma International Airport - Yuma, Arizona

This 15,000 SF hangar was designed by NEI's architectural division, Architecture West. This project consisted of a pre-manufactured metal building and structural steel construction and has the capabilities to house aircraft up to 700,000 lbs. NEI provided civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, land surveying, materials testing, construction staking, special inspections and environmental engineering. This new state-of-the-art facility is currently occupied by NASA. $1.7 million

Taxiway Z, Yuma International Airport - Yuma, Arizona

GCE was selected as the design consultant to reconstruct the existing Taxiway Z and sub-taxiways with new 20 year life, FAA compliant pavement, and associated striping, signage, and lighting. GCE completed the geotechnical investigation, topographic survey and is currently designing the taxiway to current FAA design criteria for a Class III taxiway. GCE has provided various alternatives to the design to meet the budget constraints and will oversee the project during the construction phase. $1.8 million (Est.)

Calexico International Airport Environmental Assessment - Calexico, California

The Calexico International Airport contracted with NEI to complete the environmental NEPA and CEQA documentation to acquire land on the north side of the relocated Anza Road and release property on the south side of Anza Road. Acquiring the property would provide the Calexico International Airport with a contiguous site and flexibility for future airport improvements. Releasing one parcel would assist the Calexico International Airport with the property acquisition costs. NEI's environmental team worked closely with the City of Calexico, FAA, USFWS, CDFG and other related agencies to address all NEPA and CEQA impact categories including noise, land use, socioeconomic, air quality, water quality, historic, architectural and cultural resources, endangered and threatened species, wetlands, floodplains, farmland, energy supply and natural resources, solid waste, and construction impacts. Our NEPA specialist, Mark Galate completed the biological field surveys and assessments as well as the focused survey for burrowing owls on the project site. Thirteen burrowing owls were documented during the field survey. Mitigation measures to protect these burrowing owls were incorporated into the EA.
